BEST DISC JOCKEY

By Michael Dragone

DJ Dougie Jam of Trumbull has to be the best guy to have as your DJ. I was recently at a beautiful wedding (mine!) where we experienced the coldest May 20th on record. It was 40 degrees, and nobody was prepared. The wedding was held on a pavilion at Roton Point in Norwalk where there are pull-down canvas walls. As the night approached, and the temperature dropped, Dougie (Doug Wheeler) and his co-DJ helped lower the tarps and also tacked up a couple of heavy duty blankets from their truck to help save the day. I guess I noticed something good-natured about Dougie when he showed us his video before we hired him. The fact that he had over 10,000 songs in stock at all times and he provided all kinds of party favors to add to the excitement just added to the handsome price which he quoted us. Definitely pound for pound one of the best values I received at my wedding.
Thanks, Dougie

Dougie Jam Productions, Trumbull. It’s a mobile disc jockey service. The role of the mobile DJ is very different from that of a club DJ. Where music is the key important factor in club DJing, the role of entertainer is also important to be a good mobile. Besides staying up with popular music from the 40’s to the present, they have to stay current on party trends (different dances contests to play with party goers, etc…). Mobiles also need a very strong and fun personality to make a party successful. Dougie Jam Productions have all of the above attributes and more. In eight short years DJP has grown into a full-fledged small business which employs six other DJ’s and is four complete sound systems strong. When Dougie hires a DJ, he doesn’t just give him a job because he knows how to mix music and talk on the mic, in order to be a Dougie Jam Productions’ DJ, you also have to be ego-free, know how to troubleshoot sound equipment and how to be an effective emcee and a good party host. What this means for the customer is a professionally done event that goes down smoother than a Bud Lite Ice. Their attention to detail is astounding. Dougie will sit down with you as many times as needed to hammer out the details of your party. If something is needed, he’s on the case. Not sure who to hire for the catering or the flowers? He knows who to refer you to. And, Dougie Jam sends out two DJ’s to an event, which just further insures the guests will leave sweatin’ in their tuxes. Anything short of “Wow! what a great time we had!” is unacceptable to them. The readers have spoken yet again. Next time you have a party, you should find out what everyone else is talking about!

Dougie Jam, Trumbull. Three for three. Since I’ve been writing this here column, it’s always been Dougie Jam who wins the top DJ honor. If you read our last ‘Best-Of’ column this past September, you know Dougie’s not one of those DJs who lugs around a crate of records from club to club every night trying to play the next hot track; you know he’s a mobile DJ service with four different sound systems playing all over the area in any given week. You also know he and his DJs aren’t just DJs-they’re full-service entertainers. But don’t think of calling him if you don’t wanna really get down. “Some clients tell me, ‘well, could you tone down your show a little’ but we’re there to entertain the majority of the people and get them involved in the party. The way we do this is with all energy we put into our shows. I tell them if they are not into a fun party atmosphere at their event, there are plenty of other DJ services out there that will just play music,” says Dougie optimistically. Obviously this policy has worked, because he books over 200 shows a year, with many of them going into overtime, much to the dismay of most catering halls. “Many DJs are not willing to do overtime. They think I did my five hours, it took me an hour to set up, and a half hour to get here-I wanna go home.” Dougie Jam wants to keep the party going. “If the crowd is rockin’ to the music, we feed off of that, and who wants to stop?” Enough of our babble. Are you having a party? Do ya wanna dance? Then call Dougie at (203) 377-JAMM.

It’s just past 8 am. And Doug Wheeler, chief entertainment officer of Dougie Jam Productions, refuses all offers of coffee. He doesn’t want any stimulation; he doesn’t need it. He’s ready to pull on the mambo-sleeves and start the party.
The best DJ in Fairfield County, Wheeler turned his hobby (hanging out in nightclubs and dancing) into a 13-year (so far) career of “interactive” party instigation at area weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, anniversaries and celebrations of every other imaginable variety. The secret, says Doug, to creating the kind of atmosphere that will leave his clients saying, “Wow, what an awesome party!” is listening. Each event embodies someone’s aspiration or dream and each event requires the staff of Dougie Jam to really customize the show to satisfy those expectations. And it’s always a show. Dougie Jam DJs get out of the booth and onto the dance floor, will lead the conga snake and create a new dance, all to laissez les bon temps roulez.
“Nothing beats the high from looking out over a packed dance floor,” says Doug, and to ensure those dance floors stay packed, Dougie Jam carries exclusive contracts with all its DJs, maintains the highest level of sound technology and insists upon “the personal touch.” To keep those good times rolling, Wheeler plans to some day create an all-inclusive package for Dougie Jam clients–from magicians to photographers, from dancers to decorators, Wheeler wants to guarantee that everyone’s special dreams for all their special nights come true, come to life and come out dancing.
